GC with Atomic Emission Detector (GC-AED)

Gas Chromatography – Atomic Emission Detector or GC-AED is used in the analysis of gasoline, diesel, oil, environmental pollutants in soil, water and effluent, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in water. It involves the use of Atomic Emission Spectroscopy to detect elements as they exit the gas chromatograph’s column.

The AED uses a Helium carrier gas to carry the sample through the GC which needs to contain low Water and Oxygen impurities since Water and Oxygen can interact with the stationary phase and cause problems such as baseline noise and column bleed in the output gas chromatogram which makes it inaccurate. In addition, the AED uses a Helium plasma which requires very high purity Helium due to its sensitivity. A reagent gas is sometimes used to improve the sensitivity of the AED by preventing the deposit of soot on the lamp or discharge tube. Helium is also commonly used in GC-AED at the exit of the column to increase the flow rate into the detector. The routine calibration of the analyser using a calibration mixture is common.
