Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and ICP with Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS)

Using the optimum specialty gas and equipment with your ICP will greatly improve the accuracy of your results.

Inductively Coupled Plasma or ICP, otherwise referred to as ICP-AES (Atomic Emission Spectrometry) or ICP-OES (Optical Emission Spectrometry) is used to analyse many elements simultaneously and to levels as low as 1-10 parts per billion or ppb. It is used in a wide variety of markets including food and beverage, metals, pharmaceutical, geological, water and cement.

The ICP operates using an Argon plasma into which the atomised liquid sample is injected. The sample ionizes in the plasma and the ions emit light at different characteristic wavelengths which are then measured.

The Argon needs to have low levels of Oxygen and Water as these have a shielding effect on the signal for some metals giving falsely low readings. It also needs to have low Hydrocarbon levels as these can cause carbon deposits on the mirror which reduces the strength of the signal. Nitrogen is sometimes used as a cooling gas in the ICP.

In ICP with Mass Spectrometer or ICP-MS, the ions produced in the Argon plasma are injected into the MS which separates the ions based on their mass/charge ratio. This is ideal for metals analysis to concentrations as low as parts per trillion. Impurities in Argon can cause more severe problems with the ICP-MS due to its high sensitivity.

Please note that our recommendation is based on common analytical requirements, so you may require a higher purity grade if analysing to lower concentrations or be able to use a lower purity grade if analysing to higher concentrations.
